Noise consists of irregular pressure fluctuations travelling through air. Porous insulation materials (foam-based and fiber-based) absorb sound by converting acoustic energy into heat through the friction of the sound wave with the air inside the pores. This absorption performance depends on the material's porosity, flow resistance, thickness and skeleton density, and generally increases with frequency.
The mineral wool OPTERM uses as panel filling is selected for high porosity (95% and above) to provide effective absorption across a wide frequency band. As panel thickness increases, absorption at low frequencies (such as engine and compressor rumble) also improves; that is why the 50/100/150 mm options are chosen according to the equipment's frequency characteristics.
Expresses how much of the material volume is air voids; high porosity lets more sound energy enter the material and be dissipated.
The friction sound encounters while passing through the pores; correctly chosen flow resistance absorbs the energy inside rather than reflecting it.
The absorption coefficient generally increases with frequency; that is why panel thickness is optimized for the equipment's dominant noise frequency.
In line with EN ISO 11546, TS EN ISO 11957 and ISO 15667 references, panel thickness and ventilation capacity are determined by the target sound level and site conditions.
